Allocation of mobile radio frequencies available from 2029

The mobile phone licences awarded in 2012 expire at the end of 2028. As experience has shown that spectrum award procedures take several years, ComCom has begun initial preparations for the new allocation of the mobile frequencies auctioned in 2012.

The Federal Communications Commission (ComCom) has successfully awarded new mobile radio frequencies. All three current operators, Salt, Sunrise and Swisscom, could acquire a wide range of new frequencies in an auction.

As the Office which is responsible for managing the spectrum, OFCOM prepared and implemented the tender for mobile telephony frequencies on behalf of ComCom. In 2012, operators were able to acquire an allotment of frequencies which meets their future needs.

5G and radiation

ComCom grants licences for those frequencies which are approved by the Federal Council for the use with mobile communications. However, the competent authorities for questions on non-ionising radiation in DETEC are the FOEN and the OFCOM.

Network Sharing

The ComCom and the OFCOM commissioned a study of mobile network sharing and fixed-mobile convergence in Switzerland. The study published here provides an information base to guide policy and the authorities, as well as decision-making aids with regard to possible network cooperation.
