Allocation of mobile radio frequencies available from 2029
Preparations for the next reallocation of mobile frequencies
The mobile phone licences awarded in 2012 expire at the end of 2028. As experience has shown that spectrum award procedures take several years, ComCom has begun initial preparations for the new allocation of the mobile frequencies auctioned in 2012.
These are the frequency ranges that have been used for over 20 years with GSM (2G) and UMTS (3G) as well as with newer technologies (such as 4G). Specifically, the frequency bands are 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz and 2600 MHz.
From December 2023 to 26 February 2024, the Federal Office of Communications OFCOM conducted a public consultation on behalf of ComCom to identify the needs of the mobile communications industry and other players in these frequency ranges. On 9 July 2024, ComCom announced that it would prepare a public tender for these frequencies and the OFCOM published the results report on this consultation.
Acting on behalf of ComCom, OFCOM is currently preparing the invitation to tender for the mobile telephony frequencies that will become available in 2029. Draft tender documents have been drawn up, and interested parties could comment on these documents from 14 October to 5 December 2025 as part of a consultation process aimed in particular at mobile network operators planning to participate in the frequency award procedure.
