Education
Martin Bürki attended the University of Bern, graduating with a degree in sports science in 1994 and a degree in modern history in 1996. He completed a teaching diploma for baccalaureate schools alongside his studies. This was followed in 2001 by an Executive MBA in Integrated Management from the Bern University of Applied Sciences and the School of Management Fribourg. From 2008, he also attended executive training courses at the London Business School, the Guanghua School of Management at Peking University and the Hult International Business School.
Professional career
After a period spent teaching in baccalaureate schools, Mr Bürki began his career in the NGO sector in 1996. His first position was with the Swiss Cancer League in Bern, where he became head of marketing. He then switched to another marketing role when he joined the children's rights organisation Terre des Hommes in Lausanne. While with the organisation, he undertook an assignment abroad in Bangladesh.
In 2000, he entered the private sector as head of the advertising companies Impacta and Ecofer, two sister companies of Affichage Holding in Bern. He then moved into strategic consulting at Siemens Schweiz AG, where he was involved in several major projects in the field of telecommunications and infrastructure as a key account manager for SBB from 2002.
He moved to Ericsson Schweiz AG in 2008, was appointed Deputy Country Manager shortly afterwards and took on overall responsibility for the Swiss market in 2011. He was a member of the management team for Western and Central Europe and, after they were separated, a member of the management team for Western Europe. During this time, he was responsible for strategic transformation projects with key customers and the takeover of network operations for a major mobile network provider. He oversaw the successful transition from 3G to 4G, and later to 5G, in Switzerland's largest network and further expanded cooperation with partners such as SBB in the area of mission-critical networks. He left Ericsson in 2025 and took up his role as president of ComCom on 1 August 2025.
Other activities
Mr Bürki has sat on various boards of directors and foundation boards, as well as ICT-oriented committees. He was a board member at asut, the Swiss Telecommunications Association, for more than ten years. He has maintained a strong commitment to the sport of handball since his time as a competitive athlete, and now sits on the board of directors of the current Swiss vice champions, BSV Bern.
