Extracts from the market overview
Switzerland enjoys almost complete mobile coverage with state-of-the-art 4G and 5G technologies. By 2025, between 79% and 88% of the population will already be enjoying 5G+ with very high data speeds of up to 2 Gbit/s.
While operators have already shut down their 2G networks, their 3G networks are also being gradually phased out. This is a global trend. Swisscom will be phasing out its 3G network by the end of 2025, whilst Sunrise already switched off its 3G network in mid-2025. Salt is expected to maintain operations until the end of 2026.
As far as consumers are concerned, the telecommunications market has remained stable for several years. With mobile phone penetration standing at 131.7% by the end of 2024, the growth in the number of mobile phone customers is continuing at a slower pace (+3.2% between 2023 and 2024).
Switzerland also has high-performance broadband infrastructure in its fixed network. The economy and the population benefit from competition between different infrastructure providers and services thanks to a wide range of products. With 46.4% of the population having broadband internet access by the end of 2024, Switzerland is one of the best-connected countries among OECD nations.
In contrast, Switzerland cannot claim to be the world leader in respect of direct fibre to the home connections (FTTH/B), even though the number of fibre-optic subscribers (FTTH/B) in Switzerland is gradually increasing. At the end of 2025, the estimated number of fibre-optic connections amounted to around 35% of total broadband connections in Switzerland, or around 1.5 million.
